28
Afterthis, Jesus, 1knowing that allthings had already been accomplished, 2to fulfill the Scripture, said, "3I amthirsty."
29
A jarfull of sourwine was standing there; so4they put a spongefull of the sourwine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
30
ThereforewhenJesus had received the sourwine, He said, "5It is finished!" And He bowed His head and 6gave up His spirit.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31Then the Jews, because it was 7the day of preparation, so that 8the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a 9highday ), askedPilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be takenaway.
32
So the soldierscame, and broke the legs of the firstman and of the other who was 10crucified with Him;
33
but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was alreadydead, they did not break His legs.
34
But one of the soldierspierced His side with a spear, and immediately11blood and watercame out.
35
And he who has seen has 12testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
36
For thesethingscame to pass13to fulfill the Scripture, "14NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."
37
And againanotherScripturesays, "15THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."
38
16AfterthesethingsJoseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a 17secret one for 18fear of the Jews, askedPilate that he might takeaway the body of Jesus; and Pilategrantedpermission. So he came and tookaway His body.
39
19Nicodemus, who had firstcome to Him by night, alsocame, 20bringing a mixture of 21myrrh and aloes, about a 22hundredpounds weight.
40
So they took the body of Jesus and 23bound it in 24linenwrappings with the spices, as is the burialcustom of the Jews.
41
Now in the placewhere He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a 25newtomb26in whichnoone had yetbeenlaid.
42
Thereforebecause of the Jewishday of 27preparation, since the tomb was 28nearby, they laidJesusthere.
