Génesis 46

1 Y partió Israel con todo lo que tenía y llegó a Beerseba, y ofreció sacrificios al Dios de su padre Isaac.

2 Y Dios habló a Israel en una visión nocturna, y dijo: Jacob, Jacob. Y él respondió: Heme aquí.

3 Y El dijo: Yo soy Dios, el Dios de tu padre; no temas descender a Egipto, porque allí te haré una gran nación.

4 Yo descenderé contigo a Egipto, y ciertamente, yo también te haré volver; y José cerrará tus ojos.

5 Entonces Jacob partió de Beerseba; y los hijos de Israel llevaron a su padre Jacob, y a sus pequeños y a sus mujeres, en las carretas que Faraón había enviado para llevarlo.

6 Y tomaron sus ganados y los bienes que habían acumulado en la tierra de Canaán y vinieron a Egipto, Jacob y toda su descendencia con él:

7 sus hijos y sus nietos con él, sus hijas y sus nietas; a toda su descendencia trajo consigo a Egipto.

8 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, Jacob y sus hijos, que fueron a Egipto: Rubén, primogénito de Jacob.

9 Los hijos de Rubén: Hanoc, Falú, Hezrón y Carmi.

10 Los hijos de Simeón: Jemuel, Jamín, Ohad, Jaquín, Zohar y Saúl, hijo de la cananea.

11 Los hijos de Leví: Gersón, Coat y Merari.

12 Los hijos de Judá: Er, Onán, Sela, Fares y Zara (pero Er y Onán murieron en la tierra de Canaán). Y los hijos de Fares fueron Hezrón y Hamul.

13 Los hijos de Isacar: Tola, Fúa, Job y Simrón.

14 Los hijos de Zabulón: Sered, Elón y Jahleel.

15 Estos son los hijos de Lea, los que le dio a luz a Jacob en Padán-aram, y además su hija Dina; todos sus hijos y sus hijas eran treinta y tres.

16 Los hijos de Gad: Zifión, Hagui, Suni, Ezbón, Eri, Arodi y Areli.

17 Los hijos de Aser: Imna, Isúa, Isúi, Bería y Sera, hermana de ellos. Y los hijos de Bería: Heber y Malquiel.

18 Estos son los hijos de Zilpa, a quien Labán dio a su hija Lea, y que le dio a luz a Jacob estas dieciséis personas.

19 Los hijos de Raquel, mujer de Jacob: José y Benjamín.

20 Y a José, en la tierra de Egipto le nacieron Manasés y Efraín, los cuales le dio a luz Asenat, hija de Potifera, sacerdote de On.

21 Los hijos de Benjamín: Bela, Bequer, Asbel, Gera, Naamán, Ehi, Ros, Mupim, Hupim y Ard.

22 Estos son los hijos de Raquel, que le nacieron a Jacob; catorce personas en total.

23 Los hijos de Dan: Husim.

24 Los hijos de Neftalí: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer y Silem.

25 Estos son los hijos de Bilha, a quien Labán dio a su hija Raquel, y que ella le dio a luz a Jacob; en total siete personas.

26 Todas las personas de la familia de Jacob, que vinieron a Egipto, descendientes directos suyos, no incluyendo las mujeres de los hijos de Jacob, eran en total sesenta y seis personas.

27 Y los hijos de José, que le nacieron en Egipto, eran dos: todas las personas de la casa de Jacob que vinieron a Egipto, eran setenta.

28 Y Jacob envió a Judá delante de sí a José, para indicar delante de él el camino a Gosén; y llegaron a la tierra de Gosén.

29 Y José unció su carro y subió a Gosén para ir al encuentro de su padre Israel; y apenas lo vio, se echó sobre su cuello y lloró largamente sobre su cuello.

30 Entonces Israel dijo a José: Ahora ya puedo morir, después que he visto tu rostro y sé que todavía vives.

31 Y José dijo a sus hermanos y a la familia de su padre: Subiré y lo haré saber a Faraón, y le diré: "Mis hermanos y la familia de mi padre, que estaban en la tierra de Canaán, han venido a mí;

32 y los hombres son pastores de ovejas, pues son hombres de ganado; y han traído sus ovejas y sus vacas, y todo lo que tienen."

33 Y sucederá que cuando Faraón os llame y os diga: "¿Cuál es vuestra ocupación?",

34 vosotros responderéis: "Tus siervos han sido hombres de ganado desde su juventud hasta ahora, tanto nosotros como nuestros padres", a fin de que habitéis en la tierra de Gosén; porque para los egipcios todo pastor de ovejas es una abominación.

Génesis 46 Commentary

Chapter 46

God's promises to Jacob. (1-4) Jacob and his family go to Egypt. (5-27) Joseph meets his father and his brethren. (28-34)

Verses 1-4 Even as to those events and undertakings which appear most joyful, we should seek counsel, assistance, and a blessing from the Lord. Attending on his ordinances, and receiving the pledges of his covenant love, we expect his presence, and that peace which it confers. In all removals we should be reminded of our removal out of this world. Nothing can encourage us to fear no evil when passing through the valley of the shadow of death, but the presence of Christ.

Verses 5-27 We have here a particular account of Jacob's family. Though the fulfilling of promises is always sure, yet it is often slow. It was now 215 years since God had promised Abraham to make of him a great nation, ch. 12:2 ; yet that branch of his seed, to which the promise was made sure, had only increased to seventy, of whom this particular account is kept, to show the power of God in making these seventy become a vast multitude.

Verses 28-34 It was justice to Pharaoh to let him know that such a family was come to settle in his dominions. If others put confidence in us, we must not be so base as to abuse it by imposing upon them. But how shall Joseph dispose of his brethren? Time was, when they were contriving to be rid of him; now he is contriving to settle them to their advantage; this is rendering good for evil. He would have them live by themselves, in the land of Goshen, which lay nearest to Canaan. Shepherds were an abomination to the Egyptians. Yet Joseph would have them not ashamed to own this as their occupation before Pharaoh. He might have procured places for them at court or in the army. But such preferments would have exposed them to the envy of the Egyptians, and might have tempted them to forget Canaan and the promise made unto their fathers. An honest calling is no disgrace, nor ought we to account it so, but rather reckon it a shame to be idle, or to have nothing to do. It is generally best for people to abide in the callings they have been bred to and used to. Whatever employment and condition God in his providence has allotted for us, let us suit ourselves to it, satisfy ourselves with it, and not mind high things. It is better to be the credit of a mean post, than the shame of a high one. If we wish to destroy our souls, or the souls of our children, then let us seek for ourselves, and for them, great things; but if not, it becomes us, having food and raiment, therewith to be content.

In this chapter we are told, that Jacob with all his family and substance took a journey to Egypt to see his son Joseph, as he determined, in which he was encouraged to proceed by a vision from God, Ge 46:1-7; and an account is given of all his sons, his sons' sons and daughters that went thither with him, Ge 46:8-27; when he came near to Egypt he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to acquaint him of his coming, who met him at Goshen, where there was a most affectionate interview between them, Ge 46:28-30; and when he gave directions and instructions what answers to give to Pharaoh's questions, when they should appear before him, to whom he proposed to go and inform him of their being come into Egypt, Ge 46:31-34.
