Although true Christians have held all these interpretations of the story of the Fall, viewing the Fall as an historical event (as in the first and second interpretations) has theological advantages. A real fall tells us about the origin of sin, and explains our experience of being sinners even before we commit actual sins (Psalm 51:5). A real fall teaches us that our nature was originally created good, and that sin is not essential to human beings. Since the Fall, sin is in human nature, but not part of human nature itself.
