2:2 Zerubbabel, governor of the community of returned exiles, was a descendant of David (Mt 1:6-13; Lk 3:27-31). But the Lord’s promise to David that his dynasty would endure (2Sm 7:12-16) was not fulfilled in Zerubbabel; the family dropped into obscurity after his time. The fulfillment awaited the appearance of Jesus, “a descendant of David according to the flesh” (Rm 1:3).
