John 5:13

13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.[a]

John 5:13 Meaning and Commentary

John 5:13

And he that was healed, wist not who he was
He had never seen, and perhaps had never heard of Christ before, and so knew him not; and besides, Christ gave him no opportunity of conversing with him, or so much as to ask him who he was:

for Jesus had conveyed himself away;
had slipped away, as soon as ever he had wrought the miracle:

a multitude being in [that] place;
or "from the multitude that were in [that] place"; not that he hid himself among them, and there remained undiscovered; but he passed through them, and went his way to the temple, where he found the man he had healed, as in the following verse.

John 5:13 In-Context

11 He replied, "The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your bedroll and walk.' "
12 "Who is this man who told you, 'Pick up [your bedroll] and walk?' " they asked.
13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex and said to him, "See, you are well. Do not sin any more, so that something worse doesn't happen to you."
15 The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
