Mark 15:12 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 15:12

And Pilate answered and said again unto them
Being astonished that they should ask the release of such an infamous person; and being very desirous of saving Jesus:

what will ye then that I shall do unto him, whom ye call the king of
the Jews?
at least many of you; would you have me put him to death? surely this can never be desired; or would you have me inflict some slight punishment on him, as scourging him, and so dismiss him? (See Gill on Matthew 27:22).

Mark 15:12 In-Context

10 For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over.
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.
12 Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?"
13 Again they shouted, "Crucify Him!"
14 Then Pilate said to them, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they shouted, "Crucify Him!" all the more.
