Ezekiel 21

Listen to Ezekiel 21

The Lord Has Drawn His Sword

1 [a] The word of the LORD came to me:
2 1"Son of man, 2set your face toward Jerusalem and 3preach against the sanctuaries.[b] Prophesy against the land of Israel
3 and say to the land of Israel, Thus says the LORD: 4Behold, I am against you and will draw 5my sword from its sheath and 6will cut off from you both righteous and wicked.
4 Because I will cut off from you both righteous and wicked, therefore my sword shall be drawn from its sheath against all flesh from south to north.
5 7And all flesh shall know that I am the LORD. I have drawn 8my sword from its sheath; 9it shall not be sheathed again.
6 "As for you, son of man, 10groan; with breaking heart and bitter grief, 11groan before their eyes.
7 12And when they say to you, 'Why do you groan?' you shall say, 'Because of the news 13that it is coming. 14Every heart will melt, and 15all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and 16all knees will be weak as water. 17Behold, it is 18coming, and it will be fulfilled,'" declares the Lord GOD.
8 And the word of the LORD came to me:
9 19"Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, say: 20"A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished,
10 21sharpened for slaughter, 22polished to flash like lightning!(Or 23shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, 24with everything of wood.)[c]
11 So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished 25to be given into the hand of the slayer.
12 26Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. 27Strike therefore upon your thigh.
13 For it will not be a testing--what could it do if you despise 28the rod?"[d] declares the Lord GOD.
14 "As for you, 29son of man, prophesy. 30Clap your hands and let the sword come down twice, 31yes, three times,[e] the sword for those to be slain. It is the sword for the great slaughter, which surrounds them,
15 that their hearts may melt, and many stumble.[f] At all their gates I have given the glittering sword. Ah, it is made like lightning; 32it is taken up[g] for slaughter.
16 Cut sharply to the right; set yourself to the left, wherever your face is directed.
17 I also will 33clap my hands, 34and I will satisfy my fury; 35I the LORD have spoken."
18 The word of the LORD came to me again:
19 "As for you, son of man, mark two ways for 36the sword of the king of Babylon to come. Both of them shall come from the same land. And make 37a signpost; make it 38at the head of the way to a city.
20 Mark a way 39for the sword to come to Rabbah of the Ammonites and to Judah, into Jerusalem the fortified.
21 For the king of Babylon stands 40at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows; he consults 41the teraphim;[h] he looks at the liver.
22 Into his right hand comes the divination for Jerusalem, 42to set battering rams, to open the mouth with murder, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, 43to cast up mounds, to build siege towers.
23 But to them it will seem like a false divination. 44They have sworn solemn oaths, but he brings their guilt to remembrance, 45that they may be taken.
24 "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have made your guilt to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your deeds your sins appear--because you have come to remembrance, 46you shall be taken in hand.
25 And you, O profane[i]47wicked one, prince of Israel, 48whose day has come, 49the time of your final punishment,
26 thus says the Lord GOD: Remove the turban and take off the crown. Things shall not remain as they are. 50Exalt that which is low, and bring low that which is exalted.
27 A ruin, ruin, ruin I will make it. 51This also shall not be, 52until he comes, the one to whom judgment belongs, and I will give it to him.
28 "And you, 53son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD54concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, 55A sword, a sword 56is drawn for the slaughter. 57It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning--
29 while 58they see for you false visions, while they divine lies for you--to place you on the necks of the profane wicked, 59whose day has come, the time of their final punishment.
30 60Return it to its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, 61I will judge you.
31 And 62I will pour out my indignation upon you; 63I will blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and I will deliver you into the hands of 64brutish men, skillful to destroy.
32 You shall be fuel for the fire. Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. 65You shall be no more remembered, 66for I the LORD have spoken."

Ezekiel 21 Commentary

Chapter 21

The ruin of Judah under the emblem of a sharp sword. (1-17) The approach of the king of Babylon described. (18-27) The destruction of the Ammonites. (28-32)

Verses 1-17 Here is an explanation of the parable in the last chapter. It is declared that the Lord was about to cut off Jerusalem and the whole land, that all might know it was his decree against a wicked and rebellious people. It behoves those who denounce the awful wrath of God against sinners, to show that they do not desire the woful day. The example of Christ teaches us to lament over those whose ruin we declare. Whatever instruments God uses in executing his judgments, he will strengthen them according to the service they are employed in. The sword glitters to the terror of those against whom it is drawn. It is a sword to others, a rod to the people of the Lord. God is in earnest in pronouncing this sentence, and the prophet must show himself in earnest in publishing it.

Verses 18-27 By the Spirit of prophecy Ezekiel foresaw Nebuchadnezzar's march from Babylon, which he would determine by divination. The Lord would overturn the government of Judah, till the coming of Him whose right it is. This seems to foretell the overturnings of the Jewish nation to the present day, and the troubles of states and kingdoms, which shall make way for establishing the Messiah's kingdom throughout the earth. The Lord secretly leads all to adopt his wise designs. And in the midst of the most tremendous warnings of wrath, we still hear of mercy, and some mention of Him through whom mercy is shown to sinful men.

Verses 28-32 The diviners of the Ammonites made false prophecies of victory. They would never recover their power, but in time would be wholly forgotten. Let us be thankful to be employed as instruments of mercy; let us use our understandings in doing good; and let us stand aloof from men who are only skilful to destroy.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO EZEKIEL 21

This chapter contains an explanation of a prophecy in the latter part of the preceding chapter; and a new one, concerning the sword of the Chaldeans, and the destruction of the Jews and Ammonites by it. The prophecy of the fire in the forest is explained, Eze 21:1-5, upon which the prophet is directed to show his concern at it by sighing, in order to awaken the attention of the people to it, Eze 21:6,7, then follows a prophecy of a very sharp and bright sword, which should do great execution upon the people and princes of Israel; and therefore the prophet, in order to affect them, with it, is bid to howl and cry, and smite on his thigh; and smite his hands together, and the Lord says he would do so; all which is designed to set forth the greatness of the calamity and the distress, Eze 21:8-17, next the prophet is ordered to represent the king of Babylon as at a place where two ways met, and as at a loss which way to take, and as determined by divination to go to Jerusalem first, Eze 21:18-24, and then Zedekiah, the then reigning prince of Israel, has his doom pronounced on him, and he is ordered to be stripped of his regalia; and an intimation is given that there should be no more king over Israel of the house of David until the Messiah came, Eze 21:26,27 and the chapter is concluded with a prophecy of the destruction of the Ammonites in their own land, which should certainly be, though their diviners might, say the contrary, Eze 21:28-31.

above excuse or complaint about speaking in parables; wherefore the prophet is ordered to speak in plainer language to the people. It is very probable that the prophet delivered the prophecy recorded in the latter part of the preceding chapter in the figurative terms in which he received it; and he here is bid to explain it to the people, or to repeat it to them in clearer expressions. 28904-950610-1207-Eze21.2
