Exodus 34:1-14

Moses Makes New Tablets

1 The LORD said to Moses, 1"Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, 2and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, 3which you broke.
2 Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me 4on the top of the mountain.
3 No 5one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain."
4 So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first. And he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone.
5 The LORD 6descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and 7proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, 8"The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and 9gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast 10love and faithfulness,
7 11keeping steadfast love for thousands,[a]12forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but 13who will by no means clear the guilty, 14visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation."
8 And Moses quickly 15bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.
9 And he said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please 16let the Lord go in the midst of us, for 17it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for 18your inheritance."

The Covenant Renewed

10 And he said, "Behold, 19I am making a covenant. Before all your people 20I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD, for it is an 21awesome thing that I will do with you.
11 "Observe what I command you this day. Behold, 22I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
12 23Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a 24snare in your midst.
13 You shall 25tear down their altars and 26break their pillars and cut down their 27Asherim
14 (for 28you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),

Exodus 34:1-14 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO EXODUS 34

In this chapter Moses has orders to hew two tables of stone, that God might write on them the ten commands, and bring them up with him to the mount, Ex 34:1-4 where the Lord proclaimed his name, and caused his glory and his goodness to pass before him, Ex 34:5-7 when Moses took this favourable opportunity that offered to pray for the people, that God would forgive their sin, and go along with them, Ex 34:8,9 upon which he made a covenant with them, which on his part was to do wonders for them, and drive out the inhabitants of Canaan before them; and on their part, that they should have no confederacy and communion with these nations, and shun their idolatry, and everything that might lead unto it, Ex 34:10-17 and he repeated several laws before given, and urged the observance of them, which Moses was to acquaint the people with, Ex 34:18-27 and after a stay of forty days and forty nights on the mount, he came down with the two tables of the law; and the skin of his face shone so bright, that the people of Israel were afraid to come nigh him, and therefore he put a vail over his face while he conversed with them, Ex 34:28-35.
