Psalms 95:2-11

2 Let us 1come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us 2make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the LORD is 3a great God, and a great King 4above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for 5he made it, and his hands formed 6the dry land.
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us 7kneel before the LORD, our 8Maker!
7 For he is our 9God, and we are the people of his 10pasture, and the sheep of his hand. 11Today, if you 12hear his voice,
8 13do not harden your hearts, as at 14Meribah, as on the day at 15Massah in the wilderness,
9 when your fathers put me to the 16test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my 17work.
10 18For forty years I loathed that generation and said, "They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known 19my ways."
11 Therefore I 20swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter 21my rest."

Psalms 95:2-11 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 95

This psalm, though without a title, was written by David, as appears from Heb 4:7, and to him the Septuagint, Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions ascribe it. It belongs to the times of the Messiah, as Kimchi observes; the apostle applies it to the Jews of his time, and bespeaks them in the language of it, Heb 3:7-11, and in which time Israelites, believers in Christ, are called upon to serve and worship him, in consideration of his greatness in himself, and his goodness to them. Theodoret thinks that David spoke prophetically of King Josiah and his times; and wrote it in the person of him, and the priests of God.
