John 7:25 Meaning and Commentary

John 7:25

Then said some of them of Jerusalem
Who were inhabitants of Jerusalem, and so are distinguished from the people, ( John 7:20 ) , who came up out of the country to the feast; so Jose ben Jochanan is called (Mylvwry vya) , "a man of Jerusalem" F3; that is, an inhabitant of it: now these men living in the city, knew more of the temper and disposition, the designs and attempts, of the chief priests, Scribes, and elders, to take away the life of Christ; and therefore say,

is not this he whom they seek to kill?
they knew that they had formed a design to kill him, ever since the passover before the last; when he wrought the miracle referred to in the text, and that they had been ever since plotting against his life, and were now at this feast seeking an opportunity to lay hold on him and kill him.

John 7:25 In-Context

23 If you circumcise a male on the day of worship to follow Moses' Teachings, why are you angry with me because I made a man entirely well on the day of worship?
24 Stop judging by outward appearance! Instead, judge correctly."
25 Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem said, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?
26 But look at this! He's speaking in public, and no one is saying anything to him! Can it be that the rulers really know that this man is the Messiah?
27 However, we know where this man comes from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."
