Ester 5

1 La petición de Ester al rey
Al tercer día del ayuno, Ester se puso las vestiduras reales y entró en el patio interior del palacio, que daba justo frente a la sala del rey. El rey estaba sentado en su trono real, mirando hacia la entrada.

2 Cuando vio a la reina Ester de pie en el patio interior, ella logró el favor del rey y él le extendió el cetro de oro. Entonces Ester se acercó y tocó la punta del cetro.

3 Entonces el rey le preguntó:
—¿Qué deseas, reina Ester? ¿Cuál es tu petición? ¡Te la daré, aun si fuera la mitad del reino!

4 Y Ester contestó:
—Si al rey le agrada, venga el rey con Amán hoy al banquete que preparé para el rey.

5 El rey se dirigió a sus asistentes y dijo: «Díganle a Amán que venga de prisa a un banquete, como lo ha solicitado Ester». Así que el rey y Amán fueron al banquete preparado por Ester.

6 Mientras bebían vino, el rey le dijo a Ester:
—Ahora dime lo que realmente quieres. ¿Cuál es tu petición? ¡Te la daré, aun si fuera la mitad del reino!

7 Ester contestó:
—Mi petición y mi más profundo deseo es que,

8 si he logrado el favor del rey y si al rey le agrada conceder mi petición y hacer lo que le pido, le ruego que venga mañana con Amán al banquete que prepararé para ustedes. Entonces explicaré de qué se trata todo este asunto.

9 El plan de Amán para matar a Mardoqueo
¡Amán salió muy contento del banquete! Sin embargo, cuando vio a Mardoqueo sentado a la puerta del palacio y que no se puso de pie ni tembló de miedo ante su presencia, se enfureció mucho.

10 No obstante, se contuvo y se fue a su casa.
Luego Amán reunió a sus amigos y a Zeres, su esposa,

11 y se jactó ante ellos de su gran riqueza y sus muchos hijos. Hizo alarde de los honores que el rey le había dado y de la forma en que lo había ascendido por encima de todos los otros nobles y funcionarios.

12 Amán también añadió: «¡Y eso no es todo! La reina Ester nos invitó exclusivamente al rey y a mí a un banquete que preparó para nosotros. ¡Y me invitó a cenar mañana nuevamente con ella y con el rey!

13 Sin embargo, todo eso no vale nada mientras vea al judío Mardoqueo sentado allí, a la puerta del palacio».

14 Entonces Zeres, la esposa de Amán, y todos sus amigos sugirieron: «Levanta un poste afilado que mida veintidós metros y medio de altura
y, mañana por la mañana, pídele al rey que atraviese a Mardoqueo en el poste. Después de eso, podrás seguir alegremente tu camino al banquete con el rey». A Amán le gustó la idea, y ordenó que colocaran el poste.

Chapter 5

Esther's application received. (1-8) Haman prepares to hang Mordecai. (9-14)

Verses 1-8 Esther having had power with God, and prevailing, like Jacob, had power with men too. He that will lose his life for God, shall save it, or find it in a better life. The king encouraged her. Let us from this be encouraged to pray always to our God, and not to faint. Esther came to a proud, imperious man; but we come to the God of love and grace. She was not called, but we are; the Spirit says, Come, and the Bride says, Come. She had a law against her, we have a promise, many a promise, in favour of us; Ask, and it shall be given you. She had no friend to go with her, or to plead for her; on the contrary, he that was then the king's favourite, was her enemy; but we have an Advocate with the Father, in whom he is well pleased. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace. God put it into Esther's heart to delay her petition a day longer; she knew not, but God did, what was to happen in that very night.

Verses 9-14 This account of Haman is a comment upon ( Proverbs 21:24 ) . Self-admirers and self-flatterers are really self-deceivers. Haman, the higher he is lifted up, the more impatient he is of contempt, and the more enraged at it. The affront from Mordecai spoiled all. A slight affront, which a humble man would scarcely notice, will torment a proud man, even to madness, and will mar all his comforts. Those disposed to be uneasy, will never want something to be uneasy at. Such are proud men; though they have much to their mind, if they have not all to their mind, it is as nothing to them. Many call the proud happy, who display pomp and make a show; but this is a mistaken thought. Many poor cottagers feel far less uneasiness than the rich, with all their fancied advantages around them. The man who knows not Christ, is poor though he be rich, because he is utterly destitute of that which alone is true riches.

This chapter gives an account of Esther's going in to the king, and of his holding out the golden sceptre to her, on which she invited him and Haman to a banquet of wine that day, and to another the next day, Es 5:1-8, which highly delighted Haman; and he went to his house and family with great joy, and yet chagrined at Mordecai's not bowing to him; wherefore, at the advice of his wife and friends, he erected a gallows to hang him upon, proposing to get a grant for it from the king the next day, Es 5:9-14.
