Josué 14

División de los territorios al occidente del Jordán

1 Estas son las tierras cananeas que el sacerdote Eleazar, Josué hijo de Nun y los jefes de los clanes entregaron a los israelitas como herencia.

2 Esa herencia se les repartió por sorteo a las nueve tribus y media, tal como el SEÑOR había ordenado por medio de Moisés.

3 Ya este les había dado por herencia la parte oriental del Jordán a las dos tribus y media, pues los descendientes de José se habían dividido en dos tribus, Manasés y Efraín. Pero a los levitas no les dio tierras, sino solo algunas poblaciones con sus respectivos campos de cultivo y pastoreo.

5 Así los israelitas dividieron el territorio tal como el SEÑOR se lo había ordenado a Moisés.

Caleb recibe Hebrón

6 Los descendientes de Judá se acercaron a Josué en Guilgal. El quenizita Caleb hijo de Jefone le pidió a Josué: «Acuérdate de lo que el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés, hombre de Dios, respecto a ti y a mí en Cades Barnea.

7 Yo tenía cuarenta años cuando Moisés, siervo del SEÑOR, me envió desde Cades Barnea para explorar el país, y con toda franqueza le informé de lo que vi.

8 Mis compañeros de viaje, por el contrario, desanimaron a la gente y le infundieron temor. Pero yo me mantuve fiel al SEÑOR mi Dios.

9 Ese mismo día Moisés me hizo este juramento: “La tierra que toquen tus pies será herencia tuya y de tus descendientes para siempre, porque fuiste fiel al SEÑOR mi Dios”.^[a]

10 »Ya han pasado cuarenta y cinco años desde que el SEÑOR hizo la promesa por medio de Moisés, mientras Israel peregrinaba por el desierto; aquí estoy este día con mis ochenta y cinco años: ¡el SEÑOR me ha mantenido con vida!

11 Y todavía mantengo la misma fortaleza que tenía el día en que Moisés me envió. Para la batalla tengo las mismas energías que tenía entonces.

12 Dame, pues, la región montañosa que el SEÑOR me prometió en esa ocasión. Desde ese día, tú bien sabes que los anaquitas habitan allí, y que sus ciudades son enormes y fortificadas. Sin embargo, con la ayuda del SEÑOR los expulsaré de ese territorio, tal como él ha prometido».

13 Entonces Josué bendijo a Caleb y le dio por herencia el territorio de Hebrón.

14 A partir de ese día Hebrón ha pertenecido al quenizita Caleb hijo de Jefone, porque fue fiel al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel.

15 Hebrón se llamaba originalmente Quiriat Arbá, porque Arbá fue un importante antepasado de los anaquitas.Después de todo esto el país se vio libre de guerras.

Chapter 14

The nine tribes and a half to have their inheritance. (1-5) Caleb obtains Hebron. (6-15)

Verses 1-5 The Israelites must occupy the new conquests. Canaan would have been subdued in vain, if it had not been inhabited. Yet every man might not go and settle where he pleased. God shall choose our inheritance for us. Let us survey our heritage of present mercy, our prospect for the land of promise, eternal in the heavens. Is God any respecter of persons? Is it not better that our place, as to earthly good or sorrow, should be determined by the infinite wisdom of our heavenly Father, than by our own ignorance? Should not those for whom the great mystery of godliness was exhibited, those whose redemption was purchased by Jesus Christ, thankfully refer their earthly concerns to his appointment?

Verses 6-15 Caleb's request is, "Give me this mountain," or Hebron, because it was formerly in God's promise to him, and he would let Israel knows how much he valued the promise. Those who live by faith value that which is given by God's promise, far above what is given by his providence only. It was now in the Anakims' possession, and Caleb would let Israel know how little he feared the enemy, and that he would encourage them to push on their conquests. Caleb answered to his name, which signifies "all heart." Hebron was settled on Caleb and his heirs, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. Happy are we if we follow him. Singular piety shall be crowned with singular favour.

This chapter proceeds to give an account of the countries divided to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan, Jos 14:1-5; but previous to that division relates the claim of Caleb to Hebron, through a promise made unto him by Moses forty five years ago, upon his report of the good land, whither he was sent a spy by him, Jos 14:6-12; and the grant which Joshua made of it to him, with his blessing, Jos 14:13-15.
