Amós 5

Lamento pelo Castigo do Povo

1 Ouça esta palavra, ó nação de Israel, este lamento acerca de vocês:

2 “Caída para nunca mais se levantar,está a virgem Israel.Abandonada em sua própria terra,não há quem a levante”.

3 Assim diz o Soberano, o SENHOR:“A cidade que mandar milpara o exército ficará com cem;e a que mandar cem ficará com dez”.

4 Assim diz o SENHOR à nação de Israel:“Busquem-me e terão vida;

5 não busquem Betel,não vão a Gilgal,não façam peregrinação a Berseba.Pois Gilgal^[a] certamente irá para o exílio,e Betel^[b] será reduzida a nada”.

6 Busquem o SENHOR e terão vida,do contrário, ele irromperá como um fogo entre os descendentes de José,e devastará a cidade de Betel,e não haverá ninguém ali para apagá-lo.

7 Vocês estão transformando o direito em amargurae atirando a justiça ao chão,

8 (aquele que fez as Plêiades e o Órion;que faz da escuridão, alvorada;e do dia, noite escura;que chama as águas do mare as espalha sobre a face da terra;SENHOR é o seu nome.

9 Ele traz repentina destruição sobre a fortaleza,e a destruição vem sobre a cidade fortificada),

10 vocês odeiam aquele que defende a justiça no tribunal^[c]e detestam aquele que fala a verdade.

11 Vocês oprimem o pobree o forçam a entregar o trigo.Por isso, embora vocês tenham construído mansões de pedra,nelas não morarão;embora tenham plantado vinhas verdejantes,não beberão do seu vinho.

12 Pois eu sei quantas são as suas transgressõese quão grandes são os seus pecados.Vocês oprimem o justo, recebem subornoe impedem que se faça justiça ao pobre nos tribunais.

13 Por isso o prudente se cala em tais situações,pois é tempo de desgraças.

14 Busquem o bem, não o mal,para que tenham vida.Então o SENHOR, o Deus dos Exércitos, estará com vocês,conforme vocês afirmam.

15 Odeiem o mal, amem o bem;estabeleçam a justiça nos tribunais.Talvez o SENHOR, o Deus dos Exércitos, tenha misericórdiado remanescente de José.

16 Portanto, assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus dos Exércitos, o Soberano:“Haverá lamentação em todas as praçase gritos de angústia em todas as ruas.Os lavradores serão convocados para chorare os pranteadores para se lamentar.

17 Haverá lamentos em todas as vinhas,pois passarei no meio de vocês”,diz o SENHOR.

O Dia do

18 Ai de vocês que anseiampelo dia do SENHOR!O que pensam vocês do dia do SENHOR?Será dia de trevas, não de luz.

19 Será como se um homem fugisse de um leãoe encontrasse um urso;como alguém que entrasse em sua casae, encostando a mão na parede,fosse picado por uma serpente.

20 O dia do SENHOR será de trevas e não de luz.Uma escuridão total, sem um raio de claridade.

21 “Eu odeio e desprezo as suas festas religiosas;não suporto as suas assembleias solenes.

22 Mesmo que vocês me tragam holocaustos^[d] e ofertas de cereal,isso não me agradará.Mesmo que me tragam as melhores ofertas de comunhão,^[e]não darei a menor atenção a elas.

23 Afastem de mim o som das suas cançõese a música das suas liras.

24 Em vez disso, corra a retidão como um rio,a justiça como um ribeiro perene!”

25 “Foi a mim que vocês trouxeram sacrifícios e ofertasdurante os quarenta anos no deserto, ó nação de Israel?

26 Não! Vocês carregaramo seu rei Sicute,e Quium, imagens dos deuses astrais,que fizeram para vocês mesmos.^[f]

27 Por isso eu os mandarei para o exílio, para além de Damasco”,diz o SENHOR; Deus dos Exércitos é o seu nome.

Amós 5 Commentary

Chapter 5

Israel is called to seek the Lord. (1-6) Earnest exhortations to repentance. (7-17) Threatenings respecting idolatries. (18-27)

Verses 1-6 The convincing, awakening word must be heard and heeded, as well as words of comfort and peace; for whether we hear or forbear, the word of God shall take effect. The Lord still proclaims mercy to men, but they often expect deliverance from such self-invented forms as make their condemnation sure. While they refuse to come to Christ and to seek mercy in and by him, that they may live, the fire of Divine wrath breaks forth upon them. Men may make an idol of the world, but will find it cannot protect.

Verses 7-17 The same almighty power can, for repenting sinners, easily turn affliction and sorrow into prosperity and joy, and as easily turn the prosperity of daring sinners into utter darkness. Evil times will not bear plain dealing; that is, evil men will not. And these men were evil men indeed, when wise and good men thought it in vain even to speak to them. Those who will seek and love that which is good, may help to save the land from ruin. It behoves us to plead God's spiritual promises, to beseech him to create in us a clean heart, and to renew a right spirit within us. The Lord is ever ready to be gracious to the souls that seek him; and then piety and every duty will be attended to. But as for sinful Israel, God's judgments had often passed by them, now they shall pass through them.

Verses 18-27 Woe unto those that desire the day of the Lord's judgments, that wish for times of war and confusion; as some who long for changes, hoping to rise upon the ruins of their country! but this should be so great a desolation, that nobody could gain by it. The day of the Lord will be a dark, dismal, gloomy day to all impenitent sinners. When God makes a day dark, all the world cannot make it light. Those who are not reformed by the judgments of God, will be pursued by them; if they escape one, another stands ready to seize them. A pretence of piety is double iniquity, and so it will be found. The people of Israel copied the crimes of their forefathers. The law of worshipping the Lord our God, is, Him only we must serve. Professors thrive so little, because they have little or no communion with God in their duties. They were led captive by Satan into idolatry, therefore God caused them to go into captivity among idolaters.

In this chapter the prophet exhorts Israel to hear his lamentation over them for their impending ruin, Am 5:1-3; nevertheless to seek the Lord, and all that is good; to forsake their idols, and repent of their sins, in hopes of finding mercy, and living comfortably; or otherwise they must expect the wrath of God for their iniquities, especially their oppression of the poor, Am 5:4-15; otherwise it would be a time of weeping and wailing, of darkness and distress, however they might harden or flatter themselves, or make a jest of it, Am 5:16-20; for all their sacrifices and ceremonial worship would signify nothing, so long as they continued their idolatry with them Am 5:21-26; and therefore should surely go into captivity, Am 5:27.
