Joel 2

O Dia do Senhor se Aproxima

1 Toquem a trombeta em Sião;deem o alarme no meu santo monte.Tremam todos os habitantes do país,pois o dia do SENHOR está chegando.Está próximo!

2 É dia de trevas e de escuridão,dia de nuvens e negridão.Assim como a luz da aurora se estende pelos montes,um grande e poderoso exército se aproxima,como nunca antes se viunem jamais se verá nas gerações futuras.

3 Diante deles o fogo devora,atrás deles arde uma chama.Diante deles a terra é como o jardim do Éden,atrás deles, um deserto arrasado;nada lhes escapa.

4 Eles têm a aparência de cavalos;como cavalaria, atacam galopando.

5 Com um barulho semelhante ao de carrossaltam sobre os cumes dos montescomo um fogo crepitante que consome o restolho,como um exército poderoso em posição de combate.

6 Diante deles povos se contorcem angustiados;todos os rostos ficam pálidos de medo.

7 Eles atacam como guerreiros;escalam muralhas como soldados.Todos marcham em linha,sem desviar-se do curso.

8 Não empurram uns aos outros;cada um marcha sempre em frente.Avançam por entre os dardos^[a]sem desfazer a formação.

9 Lançam-se sobre a cidade;correm ao longo da muralha.Sobem nas casas;como ladrões entram pelas janelas.

10 Diante deles a terra treme,os céus estremecem,o sol e a lua escureceme as estrelas param de brilhar.

11 O SENHOR levanta a sua vozà frente do seu exército.Como é grande o seu exército!Como são poderosos os que obedecem à sua ordem!Como é grande o dia do SENHOR!Como será terrível!Quem poderá suportá-lo?

Chamado ao Arrependimento

12 “Agora, porém”, declara o SENHOR,“voltem-se para mim de todo o coração,com jejum, lamento e pranto”.

13 Rasguem o coração e não as vestes.Voltem-se para o SENHOR, o seu Deus,pois ele é misericordioso e compassivo,muito paciente e cheio de amor;arrepende-se e não envia a desgraça.

14 Talvez ele volte atrás, arrependa-se,e ao passar deixe uma bênção.Assim vocês poderão fazer ofertas de cereal e ofertas derramadaspara o SENHOR, o seu Deus.

15 Toquem a trombeta em Sião,decretem jejum santo,convoquem uma assembleia sagrada.

16 Reúnam o povo,consagrem a assembleia;ajuntem os anciãos,reúnam as crianças,mesmo as que mamam no peito.Até os recém-casadosdevem deixar os seus aposentos.

17 Que os sacerdotes, que ministram perante o SENHOR,chorem entre o pórtico do temploe o altar, orando: “Poupa o teu povo, SENHOR.Não faças da tua herança objeto de zombariae de chacota entre as nações.Por que se haveria de dizer pelos povos:‘Onde está o Deus deles?’ ”

A Resposta do

18 Então o SENHOR mostrou zelo por sua terrae teve piedade do seu povo.

19 O SENHOR respondeu^[b] ao seu povo:“Estou enviando para vocês trigo, vinho novo e azeite,o bastante para satisfazê-los plenamente;nunca mais farei de vocêsobjeto de zombaria para as nações.

20 “Levarei o invasor que vem do norte para longe de vocês,empurrando-o para uma terra seca e estéril,a vanguarda para o mar oriental^[c]e a retaguarda para o mar ocidental.^[d]E a sua podridão subirá;o seu mau cheiro se espalhará”.Ele tem feito coisas grandiosas!

21 Não tenha medo, ó terra;regozije-se e alegre-se.O SENHOR tem feito coisas grandiosas!

22 Não tenham medo, animais do campo,pois as pastagens estão ficando verdes.As árvores estão dando os seus frutos;a figueira e a videira estão carregadas.

23 Ó povo de Sião, alegre-see regozije-se no SENHOR, o seu Deus,pois ele dá a vocês as chuvas de outono,conforme a sua justiça.^[e]Ele envia a vocês muitas chuvas,as de outono e as de primavera, como antes fazia.

24 As eiras ficarão cheias de trigo;os tonéis transbordarão de vinho novo e de azeite.

25 “Vou compensá-los pelos anos de colheitas que os gafanhotos destruíram:o gafanhoto peregrino, o gafanhoto devastador,o gafanhoto devorador e o gafanhoto cortador,o meu grande exército que enviei contra vocês.

26 Vocês comerão até ficarem satisfeitos,e louvarão o nome do SENHOR, o seu Deus,que fez maravilhas em favor de vocês;nunca mais o meu povo será humilhado.

27 Então vocês saberão que eu estou no meio de Israel.Eu sou o SENHOR, o seu Deus,e não há nenhum outro;nunca mais o meu povo será humilhado.

O Dia do

28 “E, depois disso,derramarei do meu Espírito sobre todos os povos.Os seus filhos e as suas filhas profetizarão,os velhos terão sonhos,os jovens terão visões.

29 Até sobre os servos e as servasderramarei do meu Espírito naqueles dias.

30 Mostrarei maravilhas no céu e na terra:sangue, fogo e nuvens de fumaça.

31 O sol se tornará em trevas,e a lua em sangue,antes que venha o grande e temível dia do SENHOR.

32 E todo aquele que invocaro nome do SENHOR será salvo, pois, conforme prometeu o SENHOR,no monte Sião e em Jerusalémhaverá livramentopara os sobreviventes,para aqueles a quem o SENHOR chamar.

Joel 2 Commentary

Chapter 2

God's judgments. (1-14) Exhortations to fasting and prayer; blessings promised. (15-27) A promise of the Holy Spirit, and of future mercies. (28-32)

Verses 1-14 The priests were to alarm the people with the near approach of the Divine judgments. It is the work of ministers to warn of the fatal consequences of sin, and to reveal the wrath from heaven against the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. The striking description which follows, shows what would attend the devastations of locusts, but may also describe the effects from the ravaging of the land by the Chaldeans. If the alarm of temporal judgments is given to offending nations, how much more should sinners be warned to seek deliverance from the wrath to come! Our business therefore on earth must especially be, to secure an interest in our Lord Jesus Christ; and we should seek to be weaned from objects which will soon be torn from all who now make idols of them. There must be outward expressions of sorrow and shame, fasting, weeping, and mourning; tears for trouble must be turned into tears for the sin that caused it. But rending the garments would be vain, except their hearts were rent by abasement and self-abhorrence; by sorrow for their sins, and separation from them. There is no question but that if we truly repent of our sins, God will forgive them; but whether he will remove affliction is not promised, yet the probability of it should encourage us to repent.

Verses 15-27 The priests and rulers are to appoint a solemn fast. The sinner's supplication is, Spare us, good Lord. God is ready to succour his people; and he waits to be gracious. They prayed that God would spare them, and he answered them. His promises are real answers to the prayers of faith; with him saying and doing are not two things. Some understand these promises figuratively, as pointing to gospel grace, and as fulfilled in the abundant comforts treasured up for believers in the covenant of grace.

Verses 28-32 The promise began to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out, and it was continued in the converting grace and miraculous gifts conferred on both Jews and Gentiles. The judgments of God upon a sinful world, only go before the judgment of the world in the last day. Calling on God supposes knowledge of him, faith in him, desire toward him, dependence on him, and, as evidence of the sincerity of all this, conscientious obedience to him. Those only shall be delivered in the great day, who are now effectually called from sin to God, from self to Christ, from things below to things above.

INTRODUCTION TO JOEL 2

In this chapter a further account is given of the judgment of the locusts and caterpillars, or of those who are designed by them, Joe 2:1-11; the people of the Jews are called to repentance, humiliation, and fasting, urged from the grace and goodness of God, his jealousy and pity for his people, and the answer of prayer that might he expected from him upon this, even to the removal of the calamity, Joe 2:12-20; a prophecy of good things, both temporal and spiritual, in the times of the Messiah, is delivered out as matter and occasion of great joy, Joe 2:21-27; and another concerning the effusion of the Spirit, which was fulfilled an the day of Pentecost, Joe 2:28-29; and the chapter is concluded with the judgments and desolations that should come upon the land of Judea after this, for their rejection of Christ, though the remnant according to the election of grace should be delivered and saved from the general destruction, Joe 2:30-32.
